                        Hiccups following anesthesia are very common; however, prolonged hiccups can rarely be fatal.  If the hiccups are infrequent and not painful, be sure the patient is not a 'mouth-breather' and try holding the breath, a teaspoon of sugar or a glass of water.  Otherwise, prolonged hiccups can be relieved by use of one of the gastro meds such as Reglan.
