brachial plexus injury in an adult--surgical "accident"

Fran

Message 1 of 23 Next

I had a 10 hour surgery during which time my right dominant hand and arm fell off the operating room table while in an extended position. My arm hung up over my shoulder for 8.5 hours until it was noticed. I have been diagnosed with a hyperextended, strained, and strained brachial pkexus nerve injury and have been told that there is nothing to be done but wait for it to heal and just try to use my hand and arm as much as possible. At first my whole arm was paralyzed, then I could move the arm but it would "drop", then I could move the arm but had wrist drop, now I can move arm, wrist, hands, fingers (thumb is limited), have about 50-70% grip strength, but have little hand/palm sensation and great shoulder pain that goes to the bottom of the shoulder blade, great wrist and forearm pain. It is scary. All I see is info on this for infants--any adults that had an injury--PLEASE share--email me at FrancieMR@aol.com--I'm scared because it is my dominant hand. The lack of full sensation is driving me crazy--I keep dropping things or I can't pick up things. Plus, by the end of the day, the pain has really turned me into a grump! Thanks, Fran
