How fast does cervical dysplasia progress? Or, in other words, how important is a yearly PAP smear? My client had a PAP smear in 1996 and then developed problems in November of 1998, but her doctor refused to do a PAP smear until September of 1999. The September 1999 test indicated the existence of a squamous intraepithelial lesion. My client had to have surgery and now tells me that her change of a needing a hysterectomy in the next two years is significant. Is it likely that a PAP smear in 1998 would have caught this early enough to make a difference in long term prognosis. Comments appreciated.
