Oh Yes! That is very familiar to me. Your description of a "pinwheel" is exactly what I experience. For me it appear below my field of vision and then gradually disappears, usually within about 30 minutes. I was diagnosed with "ophthalmic migraine." This is not necessarily accompanied by a migraine. Actually, for me it is rarely accompaned by headache. It can happen at any time but is particularly bothersome while driving. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a year and then sometimes it happens several time a day! I have a friend who also has pinwheels and she too was diagnosed with migraine. Check with you eye doctor.
