autistic?pdd?developmentally delayed?

My 2 year old son, Craig, is the joy of my life. He was diagnosed with autism at 18 mos. Since the diagnosis he's had intensive speech therapy. We've also been using Greenspan's "floor time" play therapy and are getting a lot of support and services through the school's Early On program. Craig started talking a couple months ago. Our hearts soared. He uses about 8 words and tries repeating a new word a day. He's doing well. His therapists are questioning the diagnosis. A psychologist we saw for a second opinion thinks he may be developmentally delayed. I would love for her to be right. Craig is much more engaged than he used to be. However, he still "tunes out" a couple times a day (doesn't respond when you call his name). He is very affectionate, but the way he expresses it with other children is inappropriate. I'm constantly pulling him off of children who don't appreciate his hugs. He doesn't seem to "read" their annoyance. Another non-autistic trait he has is "joint attention." If he's happy about something, he'll clap his hands then look at me and my husband as if to say "Isn't this great." My husband and I would very much appreciate hearing from someone who might recognize these autistic?/autistic-like?characteristics.
