This sounds exactly like me as a child. But at puberty I rebelled and became the exact opposite. My parents tried to find out the problem then, to no avail. I saw doctors all my life and took valium and xanax by prescription all my life (as well as alcohol) to self-medicate what was finally diagnosed during my second major manic attack at age 44 as Bipolar I, Mixed, with Psychotic Features. I am not suggesting that your son has any psychotic features unless he has mentioned seeing or hearing things to you, but his behavior sounds bipolar to me. I would definitely contact a psychiatrist trained in this area. It certainly wouldn't hurt.
