The only way to know for sure you have diabetes is to have a lab run fasting blood glucose (usually a 12 hour fast) or a glucose tolerance test, the latter is now believed to be more accurate because it shows what a person's body does with a high carbohydrate (natural sugars) "meal". For that test you have your blood sugar taken(usually fasting) then you drink a highly sugary orange drink (provided by lab) and wait two hours, then give another blood sample. Normally two hours after eating your blood sugar should be under 140. If that test comes back questionable then they may have you wait four more hours and test again. But in any event the fasting glucose based on your health history and honesty as far as the fast usually proves pretty conclusive. They have recently changed the criteria so my numbers may be slightly off but when I was diagnoised with type II my 12 hour fasting was 163 and I believe they considered anything over 140 to be too high. But it's best to ask the doctor I tried, while in deep denial, to prove that they were wrong but in the end however they test you your diagnoisis is usually accurate. Good Luck and write back to let me know. Patti
