Infant with sever GERD

Ashley

Message 1 of 1

We were told that our son has GERD when he was 3 months old. This came after he had already had surgery at 3 weeks for pyloric stenosis. The doctors failed to inform us that he could continue to have vomitting episodes due to the reflux. At 3 months old I carried him into a local ER with sever vomitting. It was at this time that he had what the ER nurses and doctors called a sesure. He quit breathing and his pluse rate dropped very low. We thought that we had lost him. The sesures continued and became more sever but less time in duration. They transported him to the local children's hospital. I thought he would be dead when we got there. After three days in the hospital, we were told that this was all due to acid reflux. They put him on reglan and zantac. We came home and the vomitting contiued. In fact it got worse even though we were on a diet of baby food, adding rice cereal to his bottle and modifing his eating pattern. During this time we were sent to a GI who changed the zantac to prilosec and changed his formula to Nurtamigen. Less than a month later, we were back in the same boat when he vomitted again and quit breathing at home. 911 was called and we were transported back to the children's hospital. This time they put him on a continous feed with 40 cc per hour and the neuro. put him on phenobarbital for complex sesures(ie-they don't know). They added carafate to our growing list of meds. Once again we came home. Our son was on the ng tube feeds for 3 1/2 weeks and our GI said we needed to back off the ng feeder and start back to bottle by mouth. Once again our son, who is almost 5 months now, is vomitting so violently that it looks like something our of the EXCORSIST. The GI says that we should tolerate the vomitting so he doesn't forget how to eat by mouth and tube feed at night. I am so upset because he can't tell me if he is in discomfort. The medical community has dismissed us because he has gainned weight and on apperance seems to be a very healthy and happy baby. However, I am not going to sit around and wait for him to have another episode where he could have permanent damage. The medical professionals don't know why he has had the sesures and I don't think they are interested in finding out what is really wrong, only in treating the symtoms, getting paid and getting us the heck out of their office. If you have any suggestions please help.
