My 76 year old husband suffered a brain stem "bleed" very recently. He was operated on to remove the blood, and the surgeon described the operation as "successful". However the prognosis is not very optimistic. A feeding tube is being inserted into Bob's abdomen, as he was very agitated by all the tubes, wires, restrictive bindings etc., which were essential while he was in the ICU. I believe the new feeding method is to prevent difficulty in swallowing or the possibility of pneumonia following an infection. Can anyone tell me whether it is likely my husband will eventually regain his ability to eat normally? What are some of the difficulties and hazards we are likely to experience in future? Is it possible to make a good recovery from such a trauma to the brain stem? Will daily physio and re-hab care be necessary now? I would be grateful to hear from anyone who has had experience dealing with a loved-one afflicted by this serious brain accident. Thank you for your time and trouble.
