Possible Ovarian Cancer and Delayed Surgery?

Everything I have read regarding Ovarian Cancer tells me that the only way to verify if a tumor is cancerous or not is to remove and biposy it. A friend had a positive finding of a tumor in her ovary as well as polyds and cysts bilaterally and she had symptoms which were so severe she had to go to the ER; these symptoms may be dependent or independent of a OC diagnosis, but they fall within expected symptoms. It took her three weeks to see an onclogist after positive radiographic findings, who accepts her insurance and now she is scheduled for surgery in a month. As no one can tell with absolute certainly whether the mass is benign or cancerous, how can such a delay be justified.
