Nitric oxide is not FDA approved... Yet it is still in the (study) phase.. We use it in our childrens hospital ... not for hypoxemia but for pulmonary hypertension...It still requires strict guidelines on its use and the need has to be there...it is extremly expensive.. .We administer it in whats called PPM or parts per million anywhere from one being the least to 40ppm being the highest dose....Nitric is an immediate gas it gets in the system very, very fast so the effect is immediate ... We use it on alot of our hearts ... and it does raise the Spo2...... But as always o2 is the first choice for hypoxemia..
