How do you get "genital" herpes in the mouth? Genital and oral are locations. Oral herpes is predominantly caused by herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1), although it is possible to get an HSV-1 infection in the genitals. Genital herpes is predominantly caused by HSV-2. Whilst the incidence of HSV-1 genital herpes is increasing, the majority of cases of recurrent genital herpes are caused by HSV-2. Oral HSV-2 is very rare (some Drs doubt it even happens at all). Therefore, if a truly type-specific blood test comes back positive for HSV-2, it's almost certainly a case of genital herpes
