autism

We have an eight year old grandson who has been diagnosed as autistic. He is going to school in normal classes with an aide. He has never been on any medication for autism as his parents are worried with the lack of research. The one thing they did was put him on a glutin free diet. This has been going on for over a year. The rages are very few and far between now. Since the age of 1 1/2 he has been an absolute whiz on the computer in virtually all fields but Math is a natural. He talks, but only when "he" wants to. His parents have been told he will never be able to function by himself and will probably not live long. What concerns my wife and I is when he's of the opinion "he" wants to do something he can do virtually anything. School has put a discipline to his sleeping and eating habits and this has helped a lot. I don't know if I'm imagining it or not, but over the past three years I feel there has been a marked improvement in him. I'm rather reluctant to say a lot, but are there any histories of this situation being overcome with time? We would appreciate any references or experiences (or suggestions) as we are not of the mind to meddle in what the parents are doing. Rather; we would prefer to assist them in their awareness. Best regards, Ken & Grace
