diverticulitis diet

Message 6 of 8 Previous Next

Hi, More of my experience has been with colitis. However, I did have one horrific diverticulitis attack with infected absess,.... What I was told, and found to help, was a high fiber/low residue diet. The fiber (good choice - oatmeal, metamucil) helps to keep things moving thru the intestines (diverticuli pouches like to catch things in them and this is when the pain happens. Also, keeping things moving at a good rate - i.e., not having foods hanging around in intestines for extra long periods). Low residue means staying away from stringy foods like celery. If you have any food allergies, this could aggravate the condition. If it is very acute, you might just want to go a few days with very bland, easy to digest foods like: oatmeal, plain chicken or fish (chewed well), steamed butternut squash, potatoes. Hope this helps. Everyone is different. Jenny
