unknown neurological/respiratory disease

You have a tough situation to deal with. Will the doctor share any information with you at all? It's hard to tell fron your description if the neurological problem is directly related to his hardening lungs. That condition is commonly called COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and is a widely used term for various results of emphesema, chronic brochitis, black lung from coal mining, or smoking. The lungs just lose their elasticity and can't take in the volume of air that they should. That may cause him to black out on it's own. He should be on a Nebulizer treatment with some kind of prescribed med to put in the machine, such as albuterol which opens up the bronchial passages. There are other meds too for a doctor to choose and this can be done at home and paid for by Medicare. Those insurance companies on TV, like Liberty, even have them delivered and file the claims. They do that for my Dad. Now the rest of the "Spontaneous" whatever, that the doc mentioned, I don't have a clue about. Neurology is complicated and I have been to 6 Neurologists myself trying to get answers. But the Respiratory Center for breathing is tucked away in the center/rear of the brain and controls your every breath. You need to insist on more info and get a Nebulizer Treatment going at home for him. Good Luck & may God Bless.
